 Polychromatic Light Therapy
Treatment with the NIR light system is simple and painless. Flexible pads, containing multiple infrared and visible red diodes, are placed directly on the skin over the area of pain or injury. Light energy from the diodes penetrates beneath the skin and is absorbed by proteins within cells that lay beneath the skin. Those cells release nitric oxide, the body’s natural vasodilator. After just 20 minutes of treatment, blood flow is increased to nerves and other tissues lasting several hours after the pads are removed.

What is Polychromatic Light Therapy?

The term ‘polychromatic’ denotes that more than one wavelength is used simultaneously, meaning that each light therapy pad has at least two different wavelengths. It involves the use of light emitting diodes (LED) delivering red, blue, and infrared light to the skin.  These three wavelengths stimulate beneficial innate cellular responses increasing circulation and activating the release of nitric oxide.

What is LED Therapy?
Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) are a form of light energy that is a relatively recent outgrowth from the laser industry. LEDs are similar to lasers inasmuch as they have the same effects but differ in the way that the light energy is delivered. LED disperses light (red, blue or infrared) over a greater surface area; this tends to result in shorter session times for a given area. In Light Medical Systems™ is a photo-modulated (pulsed, light emitting diodes) device also known as low-level light therapy. The infrared and visible red LEDs are the heart of this system, providing gentle but powerful non-coherent light. It uses a carefully timed sequence of settings, known as pulses, to create an environment in which change may occur more rapidly.

How Does it Work?

Numerous studies have demonstrated light, whether blue (400-500 nanometers), red (600-700 nanometers) or near infrared (800-1000 nanometers), impacts photoacceptors and triggers the release a chemical called nitric oxide. Nitric oxide has been called the “miracle molecule” of the human body and found to be the messenger molecule of the cardiovascular system.

Nitric oxide serves as an intracellular signalling molecule triggering the nucleus to produce many downstream healing substances which have been shown to have antiinflammatory, analgesic, angiogenic, and neurogenic effects. This is the mechanism of action of photobiomodulation. “Polychromatic light therapy is the simultaneous application of two or more wavelengths of color (blue, red, or infrared) via light emitting diodes directly to the skin to trigger a biological response.” Nitric oxide has been demonstrated to cause a local vasodilatation of the vasculature resulting in increased local blood flow to the tissue to which the light is applied bringing with it an increase in oxygen, glucose, and the body’s natural healing substances.

Although the vasodilatation may last only 4 or 5 hours, once the nucleus has been activated to initiate the manufacture of the healing substances, it has been shown that these can continue to exert healthful effects for many weeks

Light Therapy & Pain

We use wavelengths of low-level light to increase circulation and relieve pain. For people suffering from chronic pain or an injury, Light Therapy is a safe, drug-free and noninvasive option.

Pain is a symptom, not a disease. Light therapy doesn’t just numb the pain, it increases circulation to stimulate the body’s natural healing mechanisms.

Light Therapy & Neuropathy

Peripheral neuropathy is a nervous system disorder that shows up as numbness, tingling, sensitivity and pain in the hands and feet. While neuropathy has many possible causes, poor blood flow is one common contributor. Fortunately, low-level light therapy can increase circulation and often relieve symptoms of peripheral neuropathy caused by poor blood flow.

Light Therapy & Cognitive Function
Concussion TBI & PTSD

Low-level light therapy stimulates the body’s natural, innate ability to heal itself on a cellular level, making it a unique form of treatment for PTSD and TBI. LLLT is a homeopathic, drug-free treatment with no known side effects. The increase in brain circulation from light therapy is also believed to increase overall brain health and lower a person’s risk of brain conditions such as Alzheimer’s.

Light Therapy & Skin Conditions

Light supports your skin’s natural ability to regenerate itself and achieve a glowing, healthy appearance. Just

like a clean diet and proper hydration can support healthy skin, blood circulation is a major component of skin appearance. Robust circulation provides skin with fresh nutrients, and clears toxins and buildup absorbed from pollution and products. Better circulation also improves collagen restoration and cellular regeneration under the skin, resulting in naturally healthier skin.

The Power of Nitric Oxide
The key to this dramatic improvement in blood flow is nitric oxide, a short-lived gas that is crucial to the health of the arteries. This powerful signaling molecule relaxes the arteries, helps regulate blood pressure, fights free radicals and discourages platelets from clumping together in the blood vessels. By increasing the production of nitric oxide and improving circulation, NIR light therapy promotes healing and relieves pain.

Chronic Pain Relief                                                                                                                                                        NIR light therapy has been used by the U.S. military to speed recovery from soft-tissue injuries in elite soldiers in the Navy SEALs, Army Rangers, and Special Forces. Hospitals, nursing homes and long-term care facilities use it to accelerate the healing of pressure ulcers (bed sores) and decrease the number of falls in elderly patients. This therapy is also used to ease the pain of neuropathy, restore sensation to patients with nerve impairment, speed up the healing of diabetic ulcers and other wounds and relieve many kinds of chronic pain.

Increase vascularity (circulation):
Polychromatic light therapy has been established as a useful tool to increasing the formation of new capillaries, which are additional blood vessels that replace damaged ones. New capillaries speed up the healing process by carrying more oxygen and nutrients needed for healing, as well as carrying more waste products away.

Stimulate the production of collagen:
Collagen is the most common protein found in the body. Collagen is the essential protein used to repair damaged tissue and to replace old tissue. It is the substance that holds cells together and has a high degree of elasticity. By increasing collagen production less scar tissue is formed at the damaged site.

Stimulate the release of adenosine triphosphate (ATP):
ATP is the major carrier of energy to all cells. Increases in ATP allow cells to accept nutrients faster and get rid of waste products faster by increasing the energy level in the cell. Food turns into ATP before the cells utilize it. ATP provides the chemical energy that drives the chemical reactions of the cell.

Increase lymphatic system activity:
Oedema, which is the swelling or natural splinting process of the body, has two basic components. The first is a liquid part, which can be evacuated by the blood system, and the second is comprised of the proteins that have to be evacuated by the lymphatic system. Research has shown that the lymph vessel diameter and the flow of the lymph system can be doubled with the use of light therapy. The venous diameter and the arterial diameters can also be increased. This means that both parts of oedema (liquid and protein) can be evacuated at a much faster rate to relieve swelling.

Reduce the excitability of nervous tissue:
The photons of light energy enter the body as negative ions. This calls upon the body to send positive ions, such as calcium, to the area being treated. These ions assist in firing the nerves, thereby relieving pain.

Stimulate fibroblastic activity that aids in the repair process:
Fibroblasts are present in connective tissue and are capable of forming collagen fibers.

Increase phagocytosis:
The process of scavenging or ingesting dead or degenerated cells by phagocyte cells for the purpose of clean up. This is an important part of the infection fighting process. Destruction of the infection and clean up must occur before the healing process can take place.

Induce a thermal like effect in the tissue: The light raises the temperature of the cells through a photochemical reaction.

Stimulate tissue granulation and connective tissue projections: Part of the healing process of wounds, ulcers or inflamed tissues.

Stimulate acetylcholine release: Acetylcholine causes cardiac inhibition, vasodilation, gastrointestinal peristalsis and other parasympathetic effects.
